A little about AHEC summer health career camps...

Health Careers Camps are 5 day programs held around the state of Wisconsin. These camps allow the students to experience first hand the challenges, opportunities and rewards of health professions. The hands-on activities are facilitated by health profession students, instructors and health care professionals. Diversity awareness and leadership skill training are also a part of the camp experience. This unique camp is a collaboration of Wisconsin AHEC regional offices, local colleges, technical schools, and area healthcare practitioners. These summer camps are open to any student in high school. Meals, lodging expenses and other program costs are provided by AHEC funding and sponsoring organizations. Chaperones will be on site at all times. A nonrefundable registration fee is required upon acceptance to a camp. There are scholarships available.

Some frequently asked questions...

What is the total cost of this camp for me the student?

The total cost of this camp is either $40.00 or $60.00 depending on the camp you plan to attend.  All of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) camps are sponsored by AHECs and in some regions also by area health care systems.  This camp costs the sponsors about $600.00 per student. By having sponsors we are able to keep the cost of this camp to only the non-refundable registration fee of $40.00 or $60.00 to you the student.

Who can attend camp?

Health careers summer camp is for high school students entering into 9th through 12th grade in the fall of 2009.  Students who have graduated high school are encouraged to contact their regional office to learn of future counselor opportunities.

Is this a day camp or an overnight camp?

This camp is an overnight camp. Camps run from Sunday to Thursday.  Students are required to stay on campus.  Camp activities start in the morning and run into the evenings.  Due to the camp schedule no exceptions to the overnight stay are able to be made.

What is considered a complete application?

A complete camp application is the online Student Information Page, Student Personal Statement and the two Teacher Reference forms (from a Math or Science and English or Fine Arts teacher). The students application will not be considered until all of the above forms are received by the AHEC regional office.

Do the teacher reference sheets need to be included with the student portion of the application?

No.  Teacher references can be mailed or faxed to the camp contact/director separately as long as they are in the hands of the camp contact/director by the application due date.  Make sure that the reference form includes the student’s name and school, the parent/guardian’s signature and student’s signature before it is mailed or faxed.
